The decoration on this fireplace mantel was inspired by pictures I have seen in books of church doorways done in Norway during the Romanesque period.

 
 

The energy comes from the combination of wide lines and thin lines winding around and entangling the birds and dog and man.

I added color to the composition by including a red marble mosaic.

The rest of the mantel is carved in limestone.
