In ancient times, it was not uncommon for people to have their portraits carved in marble. Today, it seems very rare. That is why I was so happy to be commissioned to carve this bust. The formidable challenge of capturing a person’s likeness as well as their mood and personality made this an exciting project. I started by making a clay model while my subject posed for me. Next, I made a mold and cast the clay sculpture in plaster. Finally, I painstakingly carved the block of marble into the exact duplicate of the plaster using precise measuring techniques.
